How to plan moving costs
Why floor area and distance alone do not produce a reliable price.
The four largest cost areas
<p><strong>Transport:</strong> distance, driving time, vehicle size and possible toll or return-trip costs. <strong>Labour:</strong> crew size and the time required to carry, load and unload. <strong>Access:</strong> floors, lifts, stairs, courtyards and the distance between the door and vehicle. <strong>Extra services:</strong> packing, materials, disassembly, assembly or disposal.</p><p>Two equally sized apartments can therefore lead to very different costs. A home with a lift and short loading route is not equivalent to the same volume carried through several floors and a long courtyard.</p>
How to receive a more reliable quote
<ul><li>Provide a complete furniture list or clear photos.</li><li>State both addresses, floors and lift access.</li><li>Describe carrying distances, narrow stairs or difficult vehicle access.</li><li>List heavy items such as pianos, safes or solid-wood furniture separately.</li><li>Make sure assembly, packing and materials are included explicitly.</li><li>Ask how changes in scope will be handled.</li></ul><p>Avoid descriptions such as “about two rooms” when a detailed list is possible. Incomplete information may produce a faster quote, but not a more reliable one.</p>
Compare more than the final amount
<p>Check whether the quote describes the vehicle, crew, expected duration, carrying distance, packing materials, assembly and possible surcharges. A lower total can reflect a smaller scope.</p><p>Compare quote with quote, not number with number. Better value comes from a scope that covers your real needs and reduces misunderstandings later.</p>
